Dear Community and Region at Large,
On this day last year, April 30, 2023, with the help of regional ambulance crews, Trinity Health’s outstanding employees, dedicated physicians and caring community members came together to seamlessly move patients from our legacy hospital to the new Healthcare Campus and Medical District (HCMD).
A new era in healthcare had begun.
One year later, we celebrate the spirit of that day and recognize all of the hard work that has brought our new campus to life.
Our teams have worked tirelessly to establish Trinity Health as a world-class regional healthcare destination where excellence in healthcare can be sustained for generations to come. The six-story, natural light-filled building has exceeded expectations as a healing place designed to promote teamwork among clinicians and staff and to raise the bar for all that we do.
But this one-year anniversary doesn’t just belong to Trinity Health, it belongs to you and the community and region-at-large.
Trinity Health emerged from the wider community and has remained true to its roots throughout its 102-year history. Founded by residents from every corner of the region, Trinity’s mission has remained the same—to provide the highest quality healthcare services and to be accountable as good stewards of that mission through a governing board comprised of volunteers from the community who are dedicated to serving their neighbors and the region.
We take this opportunity to update you on the state of our care system and to share with you the strategies we have developed to maintain a system that meets the needs of patients and families.
By way of context, the years since COVID-19 have proven extremely challenging for most hospital and health systems across the country, largely the result of higher costs and a tight labor market. Despite this difficult time, Trinity’s leadership, with board oversight, has developed well-planned priorities to identify specific projects that will grow the services we provide and help us be responsible for the resources entrusted to us. Thanks to the hard work of our team members, physicians, leaders and board members, the plan is producing positive results for the organization. Some cases in point:
- We stepped up recruitment efforts and are making strides. An analysis of our recruitment success over the past five years shows these efforts have exceeded normal attrition rates, thus enabling us to maintain a healthy balance between incoming and outgoing providers. According to the data, Trinity Health enjoyed a net increase in incoming providers of 10%, with notable success in the specialties of urology, neurosurgery, reconstructive plastic surgery, cardiology, trauma surgery, family medicine, podiatry and nephrology. This summer we’ll announce the addition of a new neurosurgeon.
- We established as a key priority—Providing Exceptional Patient Access. This is a challenge in light of the physician and provider shortages that exist across the country—especially in primary care. But we are well on our way toward implementing partnerships and
care sites that will be announced in the near future. - We’ve committed ourselves to a vision of healthcare that’s focused on predicting and preventing disease as well as diagnosing and treating illness.
- We were proud this past year to be recertified as a primary stroke center and identified as a Birthing-Friendly Hospital by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
- We rebuilt our leadership team following planned retirements and strategic changes.
Our new leaders have brought new energy as well as diverse perspectives and experiences that have proven effective as we raise Trinity Health to the next level. These varied perspectives and experiences will enrich decision-making and drive innovation. The team’s focus is significantly more than merely managing the current business to one that actively drives transformation which will benefit our patients.• Most importantly, Trinity’s clinical care and support teams have remained steadfast in their mission to provide high-quality care to the patient population we serve.
We recognize that these transitions can be both challenges and opportunities for growth. Trinity Health has demonstrated its ability to adapt to change and ensure continuity of care, while navigating these “shifts” effectively.
As board president and CEO of Trinity Health, we have never been more confident that the investments and strategies we’ve made have strengthened our future outlook. We are very proud of our leadership teams, medical staff, nurses and workforce. Their efforts to date are a testament to the unwavering commitment of our entire organization.
Working together – much as we did a year ago April 30 – we will continue to create a world-class healthcare destination here – in the Magic City and beyond.
Yours in Healthcare,
John M. Kutch
