(MINOT, ND) – Trinity Health’s Pediatric Occupational and Speech Therapy departments will offer group therapy opportunities this summer for children with special needs.
Three group options will focus on learning, self-regulation, and social skills, with highly qualified occupational and speech therapists working with group participants on individual goals within a peer setting.
‘Groups can be very beneficial for many reasons,’ said Krystal Butgereit, MOT, OTR/L, a pediatric occupational therapist. ‘Children have the opportunity to practice and generalize skills in a fun, play-based group with their peers.’
The following group sessions will begin the first week of June. Sessions require a referral for occupational therapy or speech-language therapy from a pediatrician or other primary care provider.
Learning in Action ñ Provides children ages 4-6 the chance to improve skills necessary to be successful in a school environment, including social/language, fine motor, visual motor, and visual perceptual skills.
Self-Regulation ñ Helps children ages 6-9 foster independence by learning to control emotions and impulses and by gaining the skills necessary to improve self-understanding and self-regulation.
Superflex ñ Develops social skills such as empathy, anger management, dealing with bullies, conflict resolution, teamwork, and making and maintaining friendships.
In addition, Trinity’s pediatric therapists have collaborated with the Minot Family YMCA to teach swimming and water safety skills in the form of an All Kids Swim Program for children with physical disabilities or motor delays, and an Autism Swims Program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder that will resume in the fall.
