Trinity Health’s nephrologists diagnose and manage kidney disease by regulating blood pressure and electrolytes, balancing out fluids in the body, and administering dialysis as needed.
Kidney Dialysis
Dialysis mimics the normal function of human kidneys, which is to “clean” the blood of waste products. A pump (the dialysis machine) moves blood through one side of a filter (dialyzer) while a special solution passes on the other side. This solution draws excess fluids and waste out of the blood and through the filter. Dialysis may be temporary until the kidneys resume functioning or until the patient receives a transplant, or for a lifetime if those options are not available.
