(MINOT, ND) – Krystal Butgereit, a pediatric occupational therapist with Trinity Health, has completed advanced training in the Early Start Denver Model for treating autism.
The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is the only comprehensive early intervention model that has been validated in a randomized clinical trial for use with children with autism, according to Butgereit.
‘A research study published in the journal Pediatrics showed that children who received ESDM therapy exhibited greater improvement in cognitive/language abilities and adaptive behavior, and fewer autism symptoms than did children referred for interventions commonly available in their communities,’ she said.
The ESDM is a relationship-based intervention using everyday activities to assist children with communicating, forming relationships, and learning. ‘This training provides us with greater knowledge and expertise to help children on the autism spectrum improve their developmental and social-emotional skills,’ Butgereit added.
Trinity’s Pediatric Therapy Department uses play and other techniques to help children develop and gain independence in areas of daily living, education, play, leisure, and social participation. For more information call (701) 857-5286.
