People who suffer from fibromyalgia finally have a source of relief. A drug approved by the FDA in 2007 is having a positive impact on patients locally, according to Erdal Diri, MD, a rheumatologist with Trinity Medical Group.
Dr. Diri (DEER-i) participated in one of the early trials of the drug, pregabalin (pre-GA-ba-lin), which is sold under the brand name Lyrica (LEER-i-ca). The multi-center study of 750 fibromyalgia patients found that those treated with pregabalin showed improvements in pain scores and sleep outcomes. The results appeared in the September 2008 issue of The Journal of Pain.
Pregabalin has become an important treatment option for my patients,” Dr. Diri reports. “”It’s been quite effective; patients have done very well. It’s now become the most common treatment for people with fibromyalgia.””
