Shay Remington, 8, was named the winner of the EMS in Education coloring contest, designed to bring awareness to National Emergency Medical Services Week, May 15-21. The contest was open to second graders at Minot Public Schools. First prize was a ride home from school in an ambulance.
Remington, “who loves to do art,” colored a mask in teal, added a red hospital cross, and drew “a lot of tools that doctors and nurses use,” she said.
Stephanie Beauchamp, Trinity Health First Response manager and contest judge, chose Remington’s submission because of its inspiration and honesty.
Remington had never been in an ambulance and mentioned she thought this “was a good time because she wasn’t hurt.” As her teacher, parents and other well-wishers looked on, Remington was buckled in, and as the ambulance drove away, lights and sirens ablaze, traffic parted in due respect to the girl about to embark on the ride to remember.
Shay Remington is the daughter of Pam and Dwight Remington, both employees of Trinity Health.
