Stroke is an emergency. It’s a leading cause of death and the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States. The CDC reports that 795,000 people have a stroke each year - that’s one every 40 seconds – but most people don’t recognize the signs of stroke and take immediate action.
The American Stroke Association tells us that time lost equals brain lost and to BE “F.A.S.T.” if someone experiences symptoms such as face drooping, weakness in one or both arms, slurred speech, and any other sudden weakness, paralysis, or numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body. The sooner you receive medical care for a stroke, the fewer complications you may have.
- F-face drooping
- A-arm weakness
- S- speech difficulty
- T-time to call 911
Types of Stroke
There are three types of stroke:
- Ischemic Stroke – When a blood vessel becomes blocked
- Hemorrhagic Stroke – When a blood vessel in the brain leaks or bursts (such as during a brain aneurysm rupture)
- Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) – When a blood vessel is blocked for a short time (also called a “mini-stroke”)
To determine if you are having or had a stroke, the dedicated team at Trinity Health performs a physical exam to look for signs of stroke, such as drooping facial muscles or slurred speech. Blood tests, an ultrasound, or other imaging procedure might be ordered by the physician to gather more information. In some cases, a clot-busting drug is given or the patient is rushed into surgery to relieve pressure in the brain. Regardless of the method, chances of survival increase when emergency treatment begins quickly.
