Geriatric Fracture Program

The Geriatric Fracture center at Trinity is a program that is dedicated to providing timely, quality care to elderly patients who suffer fragility fractures. We have an interdisciplinary team that is trained to manage the elderly population. We have established protocols to ensure best possible inpatient experience.

Geriatric fracture patients receive priority evaluation and may be fast tracked through our emergency department. Many patients from partnering nursing homes and assisted living facilities may bypass the emergency department and be admitted directly to the Geriatric Fracture Center floor.

Our surgeons use the newest techniques and most advanced implants available allowing us to:

  • Reduce the chances that a fracture repair will fail.
  • Get patients mobile more quickly
  • Nurses, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, physician assistants, nutritionists, and other members of the care team are specially trained to work with older adults.

Benefits of the geriatric fracture program

  • Decreased complications
  • Rapid and improved care = faster recovery and less pain
  • Improved chance to regain pre-injury status

Discharge Planning

  • Starts on admission
  • A short stay at the rehabilitation facility or skilled nursing facility may be needed if patients are unable to independently return home after hospital stay.
  • Discharge from the hospital when medically stable (usually day 3 or 4)
